Eurac Poole Core Shop Overhaul: A Two-Year Journey to Innovation

core-shop-articleEurac Poole, has successfully completed a significant two-year project to update its core production facilities by introducing brand new cutting-edge Mingzhi technology.

The aging Hansburg machines had reached the limits of their efficiency and output capabilities. Restricted to producing a maximum of three cores, they were no longer suitable for Eurac Poole’s ambitions. In accordance with the MAT Foundry Group’s ongoing commitment to a circular economy, none of the Hansburg machines went to waste. One machine was repurposed to the Uckermunde site in Germany, while the other five were processed by a specialist recycling partner to ensure no components ended up in landfill.

The project kickstarted in August 2023, with the installation of the first Mingzhi core machine during the scheduled summer shutdown. The momentum continued into Easter 2024, when a second machine was installed and finally, the transformation was completed in August 2024 with the installation of a third machine.

The new Mingzhi machines deliver significant benefits:

  • Increased Output: Capable of producing up to five cores, significantly enhancing production capacity.
  • Efficiency Gains: The newer machines boast a 25% reduction in cycle time and a 10-12% decrease in scrap cores.
  • Safety Enhancements: Improved shut-off systems and automated processes reduce manual intervention, enhancing workplace safety.
  • Sustainability Goals: Dramatically reduced compressed air usage contributes to the Group’s decarbonisation goals, reducing Scope 2 emissions.

These state-of-the-art machines introduce several innovations that set them apart from their predecessors:

  • core-shop-outputAutomated Rig Loading: Eliminating the need for manual bolting and movement, the new machines allow for automatic setup and rig loading.
  • Integrated Data Analysis: The machines’ internal networks provide real-time insights into production metrics, scrap rates, and efficiency levels, enabling continuous process improvement.
  • Capability for Intricate Designs: With tighter tolerances and advanced processes, the machines support the production of complex core designs, ensuring Eurac Poole remains competitive in the industry.

The completion of this project marks a transformative chapter for Eurac Poole. With automated loading systems and integrated spray releases, production processes are now faster and more consistent. The advanced data analytics capabilities provide a detailed understanding of shift-based performance, enabling proactive adjustments to maximise output.

The overhaul has positioned the MAT Foundry Group to meet evolving customer demands, deliver higher-quality products, and align with its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. By embracing cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices, Eurac Poole reaffirms its role as a leader in the global casting industry.
